Doctor Foster went to Gloucester,
in a shower of rain.

right up to his middle,

History:
The poem may be based on a tale of Edward I of England travelling to Gloucester, falling off his mount into a pond, and refusing to go back to the capital after that. Doctor Foster is a nursery school poem. It originated in England.
